*** Local youth nationally ranked BMX bike racer ***
Louisville, Kentucky -- 10/20/2004
Earning a national ranking has been a dream of Trevor Reda's
ever since he started motocross racing two years ago.
This past summer the 10-year-old Rupert Nock Middle
School student achieved that goal at the National
Motocross Trials held every year in Louisville, Kentucky.
The attainment of a national rating is accomplished in almost
the same manner as a NASCAR driver gains points in the
national ratings. Points are awarded for every recognized
race that a motocross rider enters. As a NASCAR driver
piles up the points in races around the country, so does
the motocross rider.
This year Trevor, who is in the fifth grade, got the chance of
a lifetime when he earned a scholar****p to train at the Woodward,
Pennsylvania Motocross Training Facility.
Woodward is a nationally known facility where a great
number of motocross professionals have dedicated
themselves to training the younger riders.
While he was at Woodward, Trevor polished his craft and
came home with a determination to accomplish something
significant in the fall season. His training had actually
begun earlier.
"He starts in the spring by just riding his bike, then he
begins to train seriously, doing wind sprints, and
competing in local races" said his mother Amanda Valli
A lot of his training is done with his mother's participation,
since she is locally ranked No. 7 in the women's category
for her age group.
This year the young Reda raced at tracks in Virginia, Connecticut,
New York, and New Hamp****re. His home track is the Rye
Airfield Raceway in Rye, NH.
A typical meet will take two days, with a large number of racers
in each age group. This year there were 36 youngsters in the
group that Trevor raced in. They will run three sets of races to
determine they finalists, starting with the motos, then on to the
quarters and then to the semis.
In each race the top four finishers are selected to go on to the
next bracket. In each of these races points are awarded for the
place in which a racer finishes. The last race to be held is the
finals, with eight of the top riders in that category.
While Trevor was at Woodward he earned the distinction
of getting a "perfect ". That is, he finished first in
each of the four races from the motos to the finals.
When the racing was over at this year's nationals, Reda had
finished in third position in the finals. With this placement
he was able to gain enough points to earn a national ranking.
He earned a sixth place ranking in the 10-year-old Novice
Division. This was quite an accomplishment for the local
youngster.
"Motocross is a lot of fun, but you have to work hard at it" he said.
"I used to ride my bike when I was younger so it kind of came
naturally."
It's the competition that makes Reda the rider he is today.
"You can really see how he develops his strength and stamina
over the weeks that he practices" said Trevor's mom. "When
you race at the grand Nationals in Louisville, they all make
it look easy."
Easy or not , Trevor is back at his
home track where he begins another quest.
"Once you reach the top in the novice field then you have to move
on to the next category" said Reda's father Rick, who works at the
Rye Airfield.
So, now Trevor will be working for a national
ranking in the 10-year-old Masters Class.
