*** It's time to move the BMX racing indoors ***
Rockford, IL -- 10/20/2004
As the cold temperatures move in, the area's
BMX racers also move in -- inside, that is.
Jake and Candy Karau, as usual, will help keep those racers
on their bikes through the winter months, long after they pack
up their gear at Searls Park.
For the 16th year, the Karau's will open the Walworth County
BMX race season on Nov. 6-7, moving their track expertise
and pouring their heart and soul into the Elkhorn, Wis., track.
They lease the 20,000-square foot building every winter, providing
area shredders with the only indoor BMX track within four hours of
Rockford.
They use the same pride in maintaining the Walworth track as
they do at the Searls course, utilizing all the space for the 600-foot
track, bleachers and a concession stand. Walworth County houses
the same ABA-sanctioned showdowns as Rockford, including a
Wisconsin State Champion****p (Jan. 30, 2005) and a Red Line
Cup Qualifier (March 18-20) that helps riders earn points toward
the Red Line Cup Champion****ps next October.
"We like to keep it going year round. We figure they get to do
it down south, why not around here," Jake said. "The biggest
difference indoors is that it's a tighter track, so you have to be
a little more aggressive trying to get out in front. It's neat because
you really see a different style of racing indoors."
It's a different track in a different state, but many of the faces are
still the same. Most of the top riders from Rockford migrate to the
Walworth County facility during the winter weekends, already
knowing what they're going to get.
"Jake and Candy really know how to handle a track, and it
shows," said 38-year-old Suzy Carmody, a state and national
champ. "Their tracks are not too technical, so all the riders will
have a good time. But they're technical enough so that the pros
and experts get the challenge they're looking for."
