Sao Paolo, Brazil (July 30, 2006)—
The United States Cycling Team closed out competition
at the 2006 UCI BMX World Champion****ps Sunday,
adding several more podium finishes in the non-champion****p
“Challenge Cl*****” to bring the total number of wins for
Americans to 14 and the total medal count to 36.
The highlight of the weekend was world titles by Donny
Robinson (Napa, Calif.) in the elite men’s cruiser class,
Joe Sowers III (Glendale, Ariz.) in the junior men’s cruiser
class and Amanda Geving (Largo, Fla.) in the junior women’s
cruiser class.
Other medalists in the champion****p cl***** included Danny
Caluag (Chino, Calif.) who rode to a silver medal Saturday in
the elite men’s cruiser class behind Robinson and Randy
Stumpfhauser (Sanger, Calif.) and Mike Day (Santa Clarita,
Calif.), who captured silver and bronze respectively in Friday’s
elite men’s champion****p class results.
In the non-champion****p categories, U.S. athletes captured
an additional 11 wins and 30 more medals. Victories went to
Lain Van Ogle (Auburn, Wash.), Jared Garcia (Victorville,
Calif.), Jason Carnes (Austin, Texas), Eric Rupe (Chatsworth,
Calif.), Kelsey Van Ogle (Auburn, Wash.), Amanda Carr
(Punta Gorda, Calif.), Tyler Fuller (Henderson, Nev.), Cole
Tesar (Huntersville, N.C.). Lain Van Ogle, Garcia and Carnes
each won two events.
