Day Comes Out On Top Of Rain Shortened Supercross World Cup #3

Salt Lake City, Utah (USA Cycling) -- 09/23/2007
On September 22, 2007 Mike Day (Santa Clarita, Calif.) came out
on top of the rain shortened third round of the UCI BMX Supercross
World Cup in Salt Lake City. Saturday’s inclement weather forced
UCI officials to forgo the final rounds of the competition and award
the win to the top time trial finishers.

Once the seeding was decided in Friday’s time trial qualifying,
Saturday’s racing began with one set of 1/8th finals. The original
schedule called for three rounds, but the competition had to be
cut to one due to the threatening weather. After half of the 1/8ths
were contested, the rain settled in, postponing the race indefinitely.
After more than two hours of waiting for the rain to subside, the
race was called around 4:30 p.m.

Posting Friday’s top qualifying time, Day was named the overall winner.
Robert de Wilde of the Netherlands was awarded the silver after putting
up the second fastest qualifying time and Manuel dev Vecchi (ITL) was
third. Two more Americans came out in the top eight with Steven Cisar
(Altadena, Calif.) claiming sixth and Kyle Bennett (Conroe, Texas)
seventh.

The Salt Lake City stop is the third World Cup this season following the
season-opener in Madrid in April and the official Olympic Test Event in
Beijing last month. The series concludes in October in Fréjus, France.
Salt Lake City’s Supercross World Cup circuit is also the sixth of 17
events that factor into USA Cycling's 2008 BMX Rankings - the primary
factor which determines the Olympic Long Team for the 2008 Beijing
Games.
