*** They're On Top Of The BMX Hill ***
Mississauga, Canada -- 09/23/2007
Of all the ways a father can spend time with his son,
one would never expect BMXing to be one of them.
"There's not many things a father and son can do together,"
says Andy Evans, affectionately looking over at his son Sterling.
The father-son duo from Meadowvale competed in this years Ontario
Provincial BMX Champion****ps, and placed first in their respective
divisions.
For 15 years, Andy, known as Pop-Eye, has been BMXing on and off
in Canada and England, but it wasn't until three years ago that he began
to take his then hobby more seriously. His son Sterling played a major
role in getting Evans to become more competitive. The pair now coach
aspiring riders and Sterling coaches autistic children the ropes as
well.
"(We started) Just to have some fun, and ride together," claimed Evans.
Like most s****ts, a coach or mentor is a must, which is why Andy Evans
does endurance training at Kombat Arts in Mississauga. Meanwhile,
Sterling Evans was trained by the late great Tim D'Silva, a prominent
figure in the BMX community.
"This is going to be a big year for us. They haven't had a father and
a son in the Provincial Champion****ps before," said Evans, before the
competition, adding that if Sterling won his division it would be a
great
way to honor his fallen trainer.
The Evans duo weren't the only Mississaugans holding down the fort
at Drumquin Park in Milton, there was other talent from Mississauga.
After riding for three years, 11-year-old Andrew Ketchin
of Meadowvale is ranked first place in his division.
"I just wanted to see what it was like," said the young aspiring
Ketchin, describing how his interest in the s****t started.
"Things got serious last year," said Ketchin's father, Neil.
"We started buying more expensive equipment and started
competing." Ketchin finished first in the 11-year-old novice
division.
Ginny Foster, promotion and sponsor****p coordinator for the event,
has been involved in the Provincial BMX Champion****ps for two
years and feels that the event is great for the community.
"The best thing I can say about BMX is the family atmosphere,"
she said, referring to all the sup****t riders bring with them to
the events. Along with family sup****t comes cor****ate sup****t.
"There are different manufacturers who provide gear, clothing,
and bikes to some of the elite riders," said Foster.
Among the sponsors are Fox Racing Canada, Royal Distributing,
Axis Gear, and two of Milton's own cycle shops, Gearhead, and
Spokes and Slopes.
At the end of the event the Celebration of Life Race is held in
memory of Tim D'Silva. Everyone gets involved and rides at
this point. As a final night cap for the event the inhabitants of
Drumquin Park catch a live performance by the ten piece rhythm
and blues group The Rubber Soul Band as well as enjoy a bonfire
and barbecue.
