Hundreds of professional and amateur bicycle motocross riders were in
Goodyear last weekend to compete at the Estrella Mountain BMX track.
On Friday, professional riders raced to qualify for the U.S.
Olympic team in a UCI North America Continental race.
This summer's Olympics in Beijing will be the first to include
BMX racing.
Then on Saturday, 327 amateur and pro riders raced in a
Coyote National competition put on by the National Bicycle
League.
Another 300 riders would've raced in the Coyote National
on Sunday, but officials canceled the event because of
heavy rain.
This was the first weekend of racing at Estrella Mountain BMX
under new owners, Lynette and Justin Hill, who live in Maricopa
County near Goodyear.
"We had a lot of people who were curious, seeing things from
the road, stopping by to check it out," Lynette Hill said.
The track has to work on attracting more girls to race, though,
she said. While the Saturday competition included many girls
from out of town, Lynette Hill said only two local girls raced.
"Girls can BMX, too," she said.
