*** American BMX Leader Says Successful ***
Beijing, China -- 08/19/2008
BMX leader Robinson forecasts successful new s****t debut.
American Donny Robinson may be the No. 1 ranked BMX
rider in the world - but the world, he says, is catching up.
Some of his international competition has been practicing
in the United States, the birthplace of BMX, ready for the
event's debut at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
"I can't believe how many people are on their 'A game' right
now," said Robinson, who has been riding since the age of six.
"We've raced all these kids before; they're going so fast, he said,
adding, "I can't pick the biggest threat right now, but the US can
sweep medals. There's no reason we can't do that."
BMX has been integrated into cycling's world governing body,
the UCI, for more than 15 years, but Robinson thinks the s****t
still has momentum to gain from being included in the Olympics.
Some track cyclists were disappointed when the International
Olympic Committee removed Men's and Women's Time Trials
in Cycling Track to make room for BMX but Robinson insists
the s****t deserves just as much respect.
"How many races do they need?" he said.
"We have one race. We only get one chance for a gold medal.
It's not like we're any different from the track cyclists. We train
just as hard as they do, and we take it just as seriously."
Robinson believes the s****t will have
a positive impact on young people.
"You're so focused," said Robinson, who
credits BMX for keeping him out of trouble.
"Being bored, trying a cigarette, it's not an option for BMXers.
You couldn't ask for anything better as a kid. And our s****t's
a little cooler."
"We dig the Olympics. This is our place."
