$40K/year is NOT a good salary, when rent on a small, cheap apartment is
$10K/year, college tuition, fees, books and housing exceed $20K/year
at a state school, the grocery bill for a healthy diet (without luxury
item or eating out) is $3K+/year, etc.
$40K/year is NOT enough to pay off student loans early or to buy a
single bedroom condominium in today's market, even with a frugal
lifestyle.

Since Mr. Ed Dolan has not looked for employment since the Johnson
administration, what would he know?

Easy to say for the person who lives off assets earned by others.
