The new ruling class was necessary in order to implement the reforms that 
were at the heart of the system. All utopias need coercion.

Not true. They were ideologues first and foremost who believed in what
they 
were doing, at least at first. But the realities of human nature turned
them 
into monsters. It would be the same for you too if you tried to do what
they 
did despite your best intentions.

Never try to make excuses for what happened in the Soviet Union. It was
one 
of the greatest undertakings in the history of mankind. They tried as hard

as possible to make it work. The belief in communism was more of a
religion 
than anything else and when the belief failed the Soviet Union collapsed 
like a house of cards.
