Some of you have me down for a troll, but you have got that most awfully
wrong. Until just recently, I did not even know myself what I was doing on
Usenet. But I have now decided. I am a commenter! Suddenly all of my posts
began to make sense to me. Yea, that is what I have been doing for the
past
11,000 or so posts. I have been commenting!
Therein lies all the conflict. Some of you think, like JimmyMac no doubt,
that online communications such as Usenet newsgroups are for the
dissemination of information and ideas. Nope, it is not for that at all
from
my perspective. Online is for commenting - period!
Offline (face to face reality) and online are two entirely different
worlds.
Online brings out our natural inclinations. Those natural inclinations are
mean and nasty. They are for all of us. But offline we have to get along
with one another and so we behave nicer than we really are.
Don't believe me? Just have a a look at all the commenters on YouTube and
you will soon see what I mean. The comments may start off rather nice, but
they sure don't stay that way. The comments end up mean and nasty just as
mine inevitably do also.
The only thing to do about this is to sit back and enjoy the cacophony. If
you are unable to get some laughs from commenters, than you do not belong
online in the first place. Get off and stay off. You are condemned to live
out your life in the world of offline.
