The allusion was to Plato, the a priori thinker par excellence.

The ancients were not particularly homo. It was more a man-boy sort of 
thing, almost like an initiation into manhood. Admittedly, it is difficult

for us to understand the ancients. It is especially difficult for me,
being 
a man of the Dark Ages. Yea, I would have preferred to have been an Irish 
monk spending my life illustrating the Gospels (Book of Kells) in the year

800 AD. Of all the virtues, the greatest is chastity and the only one I 
value.
