>I guess it's not really a ride to make a day out of, at this point.
Well, for anyone coming to Manhattan from southeast
Westchester, it's a handy way to avoid traffic part of the way. I
always use it when returning from the Gimbels ride, which ends at
route 1 around Larchmont, so I just keep on going to Pelham Park and
pick up the path there. You have to get to know the route since the
signage is lousy, and due to skimpy maintenance, you have to beware of
parts that are strewn with trash and broken glass. Still, it's handy
to have it there.
By the way, if you take this route in the summer, you'll find
Leno's Clam Bar, aka "Greasy Nick's," open in New Rochelle. I haven't
tried it, but word is it's a campy throwback to the days when no one
had even heard of cholesterol and had no idea there were beers any
better than a Bud. The advice I've found is that the only thing worth
trying is the cheeseburger with fried onions. Order at the counter and
grab a Pabst Blue Ribbon from the cooler. Maybe good only after
working up an appetite on the road, though.
You got to be very careful if you don't know where you're going, because
you might not get there.
