I was in the same situations 2 years ago and opted for a touring bike
which
is the best of both worlds. With touring bike I can ride on gravel or
pavement and I can add panniers and fenders if required. The bike is very
comfortable on long rides and can cruise along at a good clip. My new
"road
bike" at half the weight is limited to pavement only and is not as
comfortable. If I could only have 1 bike I would pick my touring model. I
ultimately settled on the Fuji Touring and paid approx $1100cdn plus tax.
No
regrets whatsoever.
Good Luck on whatever your choice.
