In one word -- Lubrication.

I did weekly cleanings and lubing, and my beater paid the price. It is now
in pieces, ready for the scrap yard. the fram is sort of ok, but the rest
wore right out.

Take the parts from your good bike, put it on your beater, and replace
those
parts with new ones
