We pay more in health care costs because of helmet laws

by jonesjjff@[EMAIL PROTECTED] May 15, 2006 at 08:04 AM

Governments and urban "safety" activists would rather scare folks and
(falsely) make cycling look dangerous with the result that fewer people
gain the advantage of a safe, fun, and life-extending activity. Cycling
deaths and serious (debilitating) injuries are rare - insignificant
when compared to car use.

The bigger picture shows the cost of discouraging cycling, and we all
pay for it:

Annual cost of cardio vascular disease:

UK =A329 billion ($60 billion)

European Union =80169 billion ($240 billion)

        http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/4735142.stm

"In terms of life years, the life-extending benefits of cycling
outweigh the costs by a factor of 20 to 1."

   Dr. Mayer Hillman, British Medical Association=20
