Have you used google maps, especially the sat. images to see if there
are decent alternate routes? My bicycle route to work only has a small
milage penalty but in return only two short sprints on arterial roads
over a ~9.5 mile route. The rest is all residential, school zone, and a
tiny bit of bike trail. Oh and then cutting through a park, a short bit
of off-road there to go from one parking lot to the other.
When I rode to work one morning and found construction workers wouldn't
let me pass through the closed road (something that usually is doable on
bicycle) I used google sat images to find a detour via a decaying, but
short bike trail that connected two subdivisions. When I got there it
was chained off... but I just went around the posts. There should have
been a road there anyway.
