Well, I bought some shorts, and went for a ride. I was limited in what I
could do by the fact that I had to ride from my house rather than travel
anywhere else, and living in the centre of southampton means there arent
many off-road op****tunities.
I spent about 2 hours riding on the bumpy pavements to shops in
completely different areas of town (including a short break to change
the innertube when the valve sheared off... luckily I was only 100
yards from a bike shop when it happened!). Then I went to the common to
practice riding grass and hills (very small hills I must admit).
I didn't spend as long on the common as I planned to, but due to being
in the saddle for a couple of hours first and having only eaten a small
amount of pasta salad and a lion bar I think much more might have put me
off doing the race completely.
I'm aching a bit and I realise that because I'm not very well practiced
at off-road riding I'm going to find it incredibly hard. But I don't
want to let people down and I don't know if I'll ever get round to it
another time if I don't do it now. I think I will be able to get 2 laps
in at least, even if I walk half of them and come back half dead. I
guess it'll also help that there aren't so many people there this year
to compare to, so my efforts will hopefully not look like someone who
is completely wrong for this race.
I'm scared, but if you'll still have me then I'm willing to face the
challenge and do my best.
